2 Visakha Bucha Celebration 2012

Each year near this time Buddhism celebrates the birth, death and enlightenment of the Buddha on Visakha Bucha day. This year my wife and I attended the ceremony at Wat Luang Poo Jaam just past Kamcha-I. (Edit: The real name of the wat is Wat Pa Wiwek Wattanaram.) This wat is famous for once being the residence for the famous monk Luang Poo Jaam who is over one hundred years old and is said to have attained enlightenment. The ceremony consists of chanting and circling the stupa three times carrying lighted candles and lotus flowers. (Some wats you carry joss sticks too.) This is called Vieng tien in Thai. When the three rounds are complete everyone puts their lotus' down on the altars along side the stupa and put the candles in the metal bowls making a big fire in each bowl. It is quite a beautiful sight. - Khun Rut
