0 Mukdahan Community College Graduation - 2012

I was invited to go to the 2012 Graduation Ceremony for Mukdahan Community College to be held on December 22, 2012. This took place at Mukdahan School, very close to the Community College. I was told to get there early (8 am or so). Well things finally got rolling around 11 so I was only 3 hours early, but it was still worth it. I knew someone that was graduation and got to meet a lot of old friends and make a few new ones as well. - Khun Rut

0 Global House Opening @ Mukddahan (Pre-Sale)

Recently, I checked in on the preparations going on for the new Global House home improvement store here in Mukdahan. It was supposed to be open in 2 days following that video. I was somewhat dubious but hey, they DID open on time and it looked pretty good too.

0 Preparing for Global House Opening @ Mukdahan

I have been watching the progress of the new Global House store that is under construction here in Mukdahan. i was surprised to see it will be opening December 22, 2012 for a "Pre Sale". It looks mostly finished but the sides and back are definitely not done yet. They have a bunch of stuff inside and lots of carts though so it looks like its a go on this Saturday. One clown was not so happy I was videoing but screw him. I figure he didn't want me to show his manager types all sitting on their asses with less than 2 days left to open. I will be there to check it out anyhow on opening day!

0 A Tam Boon in Nikomkamsoi

I was invited to a Tam Boon recently by a friend in Nikomkamsoi. Nikom is a small town about 30 km. south of Mukdahan. The tam boom was not in the town actually. It was in a village out in the forest just before you got into town. i was led into the party from another friend's house by a couple of partygoers on a motorbike. Its a good thing too for I would have gotten hopelessly lost. (I even got a little lost on the egress.)
A tamboon for those who don't know is a party that the family gives to raise money for the local wat (temple) they are given for many different reasons. Sometimes they are honoring a death of someone recently passed away (100 days) or all the past relatives or many other reasons. They generally consist of food for the guests (a lot of it), whisky (in this case Blend 285) and beer, singing and dancing.
Most that i have attended the guests give a few hundred baht to the host in an envelope. In this case the party goers dispensed with the envelopes and just handed the host money or "tipped" the singers who donated their tips to the family. The tamboon party is followed by the family going to the wat the next day and raising more donations and donating them to the wat.
As you can tell from the video, everybody had a real good time. Some more than others....  - Khun Rut
*The map below is just a wild approximation of where the party was so its for reference only not navigation ok?

0 Cocktail Party for the King of Thailand - 2012

Every year, usually two days after the King of Thailand's birthday (December 5) all around the country the government officials in various cities and towns around Thailand honor His Majesty with a cocktail party. These events are usually attended by government officials in those locations but it is my understanding that there is no official "list" and that anyone may attend if he is properly attired and is there to show his respect for the King. I have been attending these regularly and mostly they consist of photo taking, snacking on hors d'overes and drinking glasses of wine to toast the King. (Make mine non-alcoholic punch please!). The evening is not complete without singing of songs and fireworks. The location was at the Mukdahan Fitness Park located behind the Ploy Palace Hotel and across the street from the Sports Stadium.

0 Sunchai's Birthday @ Love Car Wash

Recently Dtom and I went to visit an old friend, Sunchai. He and his wife Tao had built a car wash for their son. This is located on Tadkhan Road near where the new inner bypass road will be in Mukdahan. It was a great time as you can see.

0 Lunch @ Tom Gai Ban Near Mukdahan

Recently my wife's friend, Kim, invited us to lunch at a new place she had found called Tom Gai Ban (Gai Ban is free range chicken that are popular for making soup and other things int he villages. Tom is soup. So the name is Free Range Chicken Soup). She invited us because Dtom was out of town for her birthday so it was a belated birthday dinner.
The place is located a bit out of town near the construction site for the Mukdahan International College that is being constructed under the auspices of Ubon Ratchatani University. Its kind of out in the Jungle and the restaurant is kind of under construction itself. Now that that's over enjoy the video.**** OK with the map I am not exactly sure if the push pin is in the exact place but you go up the dirt road by the big sign with the Royal Family on it indicating the University Construction.

0 Porn Rocks Out With the Band on Her Birthday

My friend Porn had what I thought was her 40th birthday recently. (Turns out she was 39.).Anyhow she had a few... and decided to sing a number with the band at the place she was having her birthday dinner. The name of the place is "Muang Muk Moo Gatta" which is Muk City Pork Skillet. Its one of those places that they bring a bucket of coals and set it on your table and put a thing that looks like a hubcap on it and it heats up and you cook your food on it. Its a buffet and you just go fill up your plate with raw ingredients and have fun.
Its way too much fun and an insurance nightmare for the US or Europe but in Thailand they are everywhere. Check out her singing I think she was damned good! - Khun Rut

0 Rice Threshing @ Mukdahan - Right in Town!

I was coming home recently by a back road that was really close to the main road in town and I found a group of farmers gathered together threshing their rice on a machine mounted on the back of a truck it was pretty cool. If you look at the map you will see how close this is to the commercial section of town.

1 Dinner @ Charlies Steak House - Mukdahan

Recently new place opened up called Charlie's Steak House but in Thai it is spelled and pronounce Chalie. Anyhow I had a couple meals there and they were pretty good and reasonably priced so I decided to make a video. John liked the place too. Said the sausage was the best he had eaten anywhere including Germany which is famous for its sausages. So enjoy Charlie's or Chalie.

0 Lunch @ Wine Wild Why? - Mukdahan

After a funeral one afternoon we were hungry and stopped by a local restaurant by the river. It has been there forever. It's called Wine, Wild, Why? but all the Thai folks just call it Y, Y, Y. So that's what we call it too. Its right on the river open from lunch time to late evening. Prices are reasonable serving Thai food (not Isaan) and yes they do have some wine and as you will see Heineken as well. On this trip we met some interesting characters. Maybe see you there some time.

0 Boat Races @ Mukdahan 2012

Every year at the around the date of Aukpansa (Buddhist Lent) the City of Mukdahan hosts its annual boat races. These of course are at the river and are viewed from the Indochina Market. The crowds this year were smaller than normal but it was a fun time had by those that did attend. Unfortunately you can't see the finish line from the Indochina Market. That is located about 500 meters downstream near one of the many temples in town.

0 An Evening @ Mukdahan's Famous Night Food Market

Isaan and Thailand in general are famous for the night food markets in most of the towns. By some accounts Mukdahan has one of the most famous and the best night markets in all Isaan. From about 400 pm until after 800 pm the streets in the area are shut down to vehicle traffic and food vendors fill the area with their wares. You will find regular Thai food, Isaan food and Vietnamese  fare and fresh fruit and vegetables. Its all there. It is held on one long city block on Sangnangsathit Rd. near the Salaklang and behind the General hospital. I advise you to bring a motorbike if you can because parking can be difficult.

2 Ed Salsa @ Mekong Mambo in Mukdahan

If you thought Mukdahan was a provincial outback city out in the country in Thailand, you would be right. It has even been called primitive by some Bangkok natives. However it does have a thriving Salsa dance scene due to the efforts of a friend of mine, John. Recently his group, Mekong Mambo hosted a guest teacher from Bangkok to teach his students some new moves. the video above is a mixture of 3 nights of teaching and a party to celebrate their new steps. - Congrats John and Ed and the rest of the group.

0 Getting the Car Washed @ Mae Nin's

The wife's car was looking mighty dirty full of bugs and covered with dirt and other mess. I took it around to a place to get it cleaned up this place sells the Vietnamese steamed pork sausage called Moo Yaw (actually they make it too) but near the store where they sell it and some other items they have a car wash that is pretty comfortable. They are pretty quick and do a good job too. - Khun Rut

0 Late Evening Take Out @ Pad Thai Doe Rung

Recently the wife was on a trip and I was left to fend for myself. I wanted something quick and filling and didn't want to wait in the long line at the other Pad Thai place in Mukdahan to I went to this old favorite that I used to go to when we lived near the center of town. The name means Pad Thai All Night Long... but its not open all night (just late and it serves a lot of other dishes than pad thai.) I like the place and don't mind driving the little extra bit to get there. - Khun Rut

0 Singhto's Steak and Cake Birthday Feast!!!

October 13th is my Singhto's birthday. He's a dog that thinks he is a princess. He sleeps 80% of the day but starts that day at 530 am cuz he has dog business you understand. He is the choirmaster for the other dogs on the street as he howls better, longer, louder and more wolflike than any of the other dogs. He is a Bangkaew dog which is some wolf or jackal in his DNA so I guess the howling thing comes natural. Anyhow over the year he has been a good boy, he quit digging holes in the garden, he stopped tearing up the orchids, he bit the hell out of the policeman's nasty dog. he keeps all the would be prowlers and miscreants in fear because of his fierce demeanor, and does great tricks for fishoes. In recognition of all that and just cuz he is cool. I gave him a birthday feast of steak and cake. No candle or he would have eaten that too. - Khun Rut

0 English Camp @ Loeng Nok Taw

Recently my friend John was asked to take part in an "English Camp" for those of you that don't live in Thailand you may not be familiar with exactly what that is. Basically it is an exercise in motivating the students and staff to learn English. There is a lot of fun and activities for the students. Native speakers are often included in the fun. We had a great time and it seemed like the students did too. Kudos go out to to the staff of Chumchonbannakoknongbok  School near Loeng Nok Taw in Yasoton province. These include Kru Pranee, Kru Prae and Kru Peechit and Khun Phatson with her university team from Ratchabat University - Roiet. It was a good time had by all.

A note in the map below the push pin does not indicate the location of the school it is only the location of Loeng Nok Taw city.

0 Fire and Gas Explosion Kills 2 in Mukdahan

Recently I had to take our water pump in for repair and while I was looking for a parking place by the shop I found the street blocked off and a scene of devastation. I came back later and shot some video of the aftermath. The word is 2 people were killed, its lucky there weren't more.

0 Dinner @ Luknam Jaohon in Mukdahan

This restaurant's specialty is Jaohon, an Isaan soup dish. Its kind of like suki where you add veggies and meat to the broth but with suki you get a lot of different meats or seafood. Jaohon only has pork, beef or fish (usually pork) and a bunch of veggies more than with suki. Also the "namchim" (dipping sauce) is very different flavor and is definitely Isaan in flavor. We like this one because you get way more veggies than the other places and they are always fresh and the service is really good. Open lunch til late evening Under 300 baht for 2 including drinks.

0 Special 3 Day - Mukdahan 30th Anniversary Post

The 2 videos below are from the opening day of the Anniversary. The first one was taken in the early morning at the Two Sisters Shrine (Sangnangsathit) at the north end of the Indochina Market. The second was taken that same evening at the Salaklang (the Provincial Government Office) .

Day Two - Sept. 28th

The second day of the festival was loaded with song dance and dramatic performances. The highlights of these are in the first video. The second video is a performance by a Morlam group from Dontan who were really great and performed their PG version of their Morlam act.

The third and final day for the 30th Anniversary Celebration of Mukdahan's being named its own province features more song and dance routines. 0 A Bus Trip to Udon Thani

Recently took a bus trip to Udon Thani and I recorded bits of the journey. When I went to inquire about the ticket I was told it would cost 207 baht. When I actually purchased the ticket it cost 229 baht. The return trip from Udon to Mukdahan cost 176 baht. I think they were just making shit up as they went if you ask me.

0 Mukdahan School Retirement Party - 2 Video Special

This year Mukdahan School had 7 teachers and staff retiring or taking an early retirement. The school decided to fete them with a retirement party in their honor. The party was held at the meeting hall on campus with hundreds of friends, relatives and co-workers in attendance. Gifts were given by many and there was food, drink, and a singing and dancing show put on by their peers and students. It was a great time had by all. The above video is an over view of the party. 0 Construction @ Mukdahan Provincial Office (Salaklang)

Recently I had to go to the Salaklang in Mukdahan to get the upcoming schedule for the 30th anniversary of Mukdahan becoming a province. When I got there I found that, in addition to the work being done on the new building that is being erected to replace the one that was burned down in the aftermath of the Red Shirt rallies a couple of years ago, there was a lot of work being done in the adjacent field. This is supposed to be completed by Sept 27 for the festivities. Seems like they have a lot of work to do and not much time to do it in. Good luck - Khun Rut

This is the first in a series of 2 videos in one post of the opening of the Big C Store here in Mukdahan. This is the day before the opening. - Khun Rut

Above is video taken the opening night. The scene was controlled madness with tons of cars and people. I was actually pleasantly surprised that it went so smoothly and that the store had a real good handle on the crowd and the traffic problems. All in all a job well done by Big C. - Khun Rut

0 Strange Bugs Being Sold in Mukdahan

I was at the market waiting to video the aerobics one afternoon and was killing time talking to a friend of mine who is a vendor there. I noted some really strange metallic green insects that she was selling. I assumed that these were some delicacy since the local people eat many different varieties of insects. I found out in this case it was not true. They are called "mangkop" and mostly people get them for their kids to play with. They might tie a string to them and fly them around on the tether or some other play ( I can't imagine what.). One woman bought some to release them as a merit. I have seen this done with birds and fish but never with insects. - Khun Rut

0 Mukdahan Red Nagas Soccer Highlights August 25, 2012

A friend of mine asked me to go to the Soccer game this past Saturday to film some action of one of the players on the Mukdahan side. It had been raining on and off most of the day and the field was very wet and a little muddy in spots and the ball would just die in big puddles of water. 0 Dinner At Phuong Phed Garden

Tonight we had dinner at a place in Mukdahan that is probably the most famous Isaan food restaurant in town. We go there on a regular basis, perhaps once a month or so. As I said the food is Isaan style not your normal Thai fare so it is a lot of Larb, Mekhong fish, and Aom (a soup made with fermented fish juice as a flavoring). There is usually a singer / guitarist that plays Thai country ballads. It overlooks the river with a clear view of Savannakhet Laos. Good food, moderate prices. - Khun Rut

0 Kent Dortman Funeral - August 16, 2012

Early this past week I received word that an old friend has passed away. I had not seen Kent for quite a long time maybe as long as 2 years. We became friends with he used to come to a coffee shop I had some years ago. We would play chess and talk. Turns out he was diagnosed with cancer about a month or 2 before his death in Ubon Rachatani at the hospital there. He is survived by his 2 older Danish children, his older son Mikhail (who are shown leading the procession around the crematory) and 2 younger children (a boy and a girl who were dressed as a monk and a nun as tradition dictates).
There was some confusion as to the site of the funeral. I had first heard of his death from another expat here in town that knew a little bit only. We assumed, and the rumor was, that the funeral was to be held here in Mukdahan where Kent was a long time resident. After a couple days there was no word. On Thursday morning (the day of the funeral) I got an email telling me that the funeral was to be held in a Wat near Kamcha-I about 30 km. away from Mukdahan. There are many wats in the villages outside of Kamcha-I and some of the guys had GPS units and were going to just drive to each one until they found it. Luckily I have a friend that lives in Kamcha-I and teaches lessons at one of the wats. She was able to find out through the wat network what village the wat was in. It was Wat Pa in Ban Kho a quick Google map search and a phone call to my friend Wayne who lives near there was able to get me the best directions.

0 School Girls Doing Road Repair in Mukdahan

There is a stretch of road up near our house that has been bad for years. About once a year someone comes around to patch it up but within a few months its back to as bad or worse than it was before. About 6 months ago they repaired it and repaved the whole road and now its worse than it ever was. I think there is a water pipe under the roadway that is leaking because even when it doesn't rain there is water in the potholes. Anyhow i was leaving the house today and saw a bunch of school girls dumping gravel in the potholes to fix the road. Amazing Thailand. - Khun Rut

0 Lunch at the Big Chicken in Mukdahan

A couple days ago my wife and I went to the popular restaurant that I call the Big Chicken but Thais call the Highway Chicken due to the proximity of the Highway Department (Gai Yang Tung Luang). It was a holiday and business was brisk. The fish was already sold out so we ordered Gai Ban (free range chicken). When the bill came we got charged for a full free range chicken but only got a half of a regular chicken and the somtam we ordered never came either. My missus sorted out the bill to her satisfaction. but not before I dropped my camera while looking for 5 baht. Every thing turned out ok in the end though. 2 Visakha Bucha Celebration 2012

Each year near this time Buddhism celebrates the birth, death and enlightenment of the Buddha on Visakha Bucha day. This year my wife and I attended the ceremony at Wat Luang Poo Jaam just past Kamcha-I. (Edit: The real name of the wat is Wat Pa Wiwek Wattanaram.) This wat is famous for once being the residence for the famous monk Luang Poo Jaam who is over one hundred years old and is said to have attained enlightenment. The ceremony consists of chanting and circling the stupa three times carrying lighted candles and lotus flowers. (Some wats you carry joss sticks too.) This is called Vieng tien in Thai. When the three rounds are complete everyone puts their lotus' down on the altars along side the stupa and put the candles in the metal bowls making a big fire in each bowl. It is quite a beautiful sight. - Khun Rut

0 DIY Homemade Bokashi Drum

This is a video I made about creating my own Bokashi composting drum. My nest door neighbor Ted Dunn came up with the design that I copied. Bokashi is a way of recycling your household and garden waste in to a rich fertilizer. It basically pickles the waste and grows millions of good organism to add to the soil. When you dump it in the ground the worms go crazy and make you some super soil. Enjoy.
